Microbiology Technician

HP Environmental, Inc. (HPE), an innovative and growing laboratory in Herndon, VA, is seeking an entry level candidate to work as a Microbiology Technician.  We are looking for a passionate, highly motivated individual to join our Environmental Microbiology Lab. The candidate will support day-to-day activities of the microbiology laboratory team. This is a hands-on entry-level position, which may include training on aseptic techniques & laboratory protocols as needed.

Responsibilities include:

  • Setup, prepare, & analyze microbiological samples
  • Perform lab tests examining micro-organisms (bacteria/fungi)
  • Use LIMS to accession samples, enter result data, and produce reports
  • Isolate and identify environmental samples of micro-organisms according to established procedures
  • Evaluate quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials, & equipment
  • Coordinate the preparation of media, reagents, supplies & other materials used in the examination, & analysis process
  • Culture and isolate microorganisms (bacteria & fungi)
  • Conduct sample analysis & maintain detailed documentation of findings
  • Prepare and maintain equipment & instruments
  • Participate in laboratory housekeeping responsibilities and maintain inventory
  • Examine & enumerate fungal spores using direct microscopic analysis
  • Comply with lab safety requirements & procedures
  • Support laboratory staff in general lab operations such as cleaning, autoclaving, & waste disposal
  • Perform microbe identification & colony counts on plates/slides and record results

Qualifications include:

  • HS Diploma required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology or a related scientific field preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.
  • Must be highly motivated, detail oriented, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation includes:

  • 40 hours per week, 8:30-5:00 pm. Some weekend work may be required.
  • Salary range $22.50 – $25.50 / hourly commensurate with experience
